What is a base line test?

\n

A baseline test is a series of objective measures taken on a healthy person\, BEFORE the inj ury happens. These results are then used as a comparison should the person suffer a concussion.

\n

\n

Why should you get one?< /b>

\n

A concussion is a dysfunction within brain cells from a rapid acceleration or deceleration of the head. It is a functional injury\, not a structural injury. This means there has not been any damage to the structure of the brain\; there has only been a temporary energy deficit. To date there is no imaging that can diagnose a concussion\; a CT scan or MRI will not detect concussions.

\n< p>

\n

It takes weeks to months to r ecover from a concussion. The concerning part is that symptoms disappear w ithin a week or two. During the period after a concussion when your brain is still recovering\, it is extremely vulnerable to additional trauma\, es pecially in the case of children and adolescents whose brains have not yet fully developed. If the brain has not fully recovered and you suffer anot her concussion\, the results can be fatal or at the very least result in p rolonged recovery or potentially permanent effects. Thus the big concern i s not the first concussion… It’s the second\, or third.

\n

\n

In most cases you DO NOT need a ba seline test to make a diagnosis of concussion. If a person has any signs o r symptoms of a concussion following a significant impact or fall\, the di agnosis is concussion. The purpose of the baseline test\, therefore\, is t o provide a better clinical picture of brain recovery\, and more accuratel y determine when it is safe for a person to return to sports and other hig h-risk activities (because symptoms are a poor indicator of brain recovery ).

\n

\n

A comprehensive multimodal baseline assessm ent is currently the best available tool to manage concussion injuries saf ely.
